Introducing the Majete Elephant Bracelet Collection…

This collection is made up of three unique bracelets named after some of our favorite places in Malawi, Africa — Majete, Zomba and Karonga. Each bracelet’s style and color represents the nature and beauty of those three districts. Select one or stack them all! We love all things elephant, and we can’t wait to see you wearing yours!

This item will stretch to fit. If you have additional requests on sizing, send us a note here with your name and email.

Behind the Bracelets:

Harriet (pictured in photo 4) and Better than Okay Founder, Alexis Gilmore (pictured in photo 2), journeyed to the United States of America from Malawi, Africa to receive medical treatment from a non-profit hospital for Harriet’s condition (Read more here). The original three to four month journey unexpectedly extended due to the delays of the pandemic and the severity of Harriet’s case. With long stays in the hospital feeling homesick, Harriet and Alexis found a new love for beads and decided to create a collection full of the places they missed most and the elephants they called friends.

In Chichewa, we call elephants “Njovu.” We even know people named Njovu. Malawian’s love their elephants, and so do we. Here’s a little bit behind the elephants and the places:

Majete — This is the place Harriet and Alexis spotted their first elephant (well, family of elephants really). African elephants are HUGE and can be a bit aggressive, so you have to be really quiet when they are near you. As a family of elephants approached us, we turned the engine off so that they wouldn’t notice us, but as soon as we turned the engine back on, we had to speed away since one of the elephants came charging after us! We love Majete; it’s quite magical.

Zomba — This is Alexis’ favorite place in all of Malawi. Some of her favorite people live here, her favorite villages are here, and you can find her favorite raspberries on the way up the Zomba Plateau. It’s wonderfully green with beautiful waterfalls and big mountains. The atmosphere is incredible and the people make it that more special!

Karonga — Harriet’s family line is from this district - her mom, her uncle and many of her extended family members. Though she grew up in a village over six hours away, Karonga is what she’d say is her true home district. Karonga is close to Lake Malawi, an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system. Its clear blue waters and small islands make it a must-see place for many visitors. Karonga is more than home; it’s family.
